Marketing Lessons for Manufactured Housing? Forbes Reports Online Ad Revenue vs. Broadcast TV

April 13th, 2014 No comments

On 4.10.2014, Robert Hof writing in Forbes colorfully reported that, Perhaps the iconic pose of our era is someone squinting at a smartphone screen–replacing another iconic pose, the couch potato pointing a remote at the TV screen.” Hof says that's due in part to the use of hand-held devices, such as tablets and smartphones, which led online ad revenue to now exceed that of broadcast TV.

This is a first, but not an unexpected outcome!

Citing the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) as his source, Hof points out that cable TV still exceeds broadcast and online ad revenues, but the gap is shrinking. The IAB report lays out these facts:

  • U.S. interactive advertising revenues for 2013 hit an all-time high of $42.8 billion
  • 17 percent growth in online revenue, from 2012’s landmark revenues of $36.6 billion.
  • Broadcast television advertising revenues ($40.1 billion)
  • Digital video, a component of display-related advertising, brought in $2.8 billion in full year 2013, up 19 percent over revenues of $2.3 billion in 2012. As a result, it also increased its share to become the fourth largest format, directly behind mobile.

  • Search revenues totaled $18.4 billion in 2013, up 9 percent from 2012, when search totaled $16.9 billion.
  • Display-related advertising revenues in 2013 totaled $12.8 billion or 30 percent of the year’s revenues, a rise of 7 percent over $12 billion in 2012.
  • Retail advertisers continue to represent the largest category of internet ad spending, responsible for 21 percent in 2013, followed by financial services and closely trailed by automotive which account for 13 and 12 percent of the year’s revenues respectively.

Here are some gems from the IAB report in a graphic format.

credit-iab-report-posted-cutting-edge-marketing-sales-blog-mhpronews-com

When you see “search,” realize that this is one of many reasons Google is getting megabucks.

Think about resources such as Google Ad words, but don't forget to check out our Joe Karn's report – Get your Business on the Top of Google…Guaranteed? – on this hot subject! Joe lays out a potential solution for those who want to use Ad Words, but don't have a huge budget for it. Don't miss it!

Are you Doing the Right Online Marketing?

Note the next highest percentage of revenue in the online report that goes to banner ads.

Banner ads have been a key part of what The Louisville Manufactured Housing Show and the Manufactured Housing Institute have used on MHProNews.com to drive traffic to their events. MHI reported recently that they are up 39% over the same time frame last year, and what else can you point to that is new in their promotion besides exposure on MHProNews.com?

Dennis Hill has laid out facts about the trends on the Louisville Show, which previously had been canceled in 2010, and was brought back in 2011. The big change for the show was again the use of banner ads and articles on MHProNews.

Don't Blow Your Budget! One Size does NOT fit All!

Let's be clear, there are a range of resources online that can yield success, which is part of what this IAB report that Forbes has covered showcases.

A web marketing pro outside of manufactured housing, and not familiar with our industry, might suggest a google ad words campaign to boost the turnout at an industry trade show. We'd say, 'waste of money.' Why? Because adwords generally targets the public at large, and the trade show audience is laser focused. The most viable tool to reach them are the ones we are currently using!

Could there be others? Sure, but that would take a different report than this one. The point is that one size does NOT fit all.

Are You Online? Do You Have an Updated Website?

A prominent state association executive reported that in his state, well over half of the communities had no internet website. Ouch!

Contrast that with the major MHC players, who usually have a serious investments in websites and other online marketing dollars. Or or most MH street retailers, who normally have a website, even if it is 4 to 10 years old (and if so, then it shows…).

Having a modern website, that is mobile friendly, is necessary for modern marking.

As important as websites, social media and other internet based resources are, you can't overlook the rapidly rising role of digital video and its role in marketing.

Digital Video

We are spending more time doing digital interviews, which have been very popular. No surprise! Video is dominating online usage, and is bound to grow in its revenues, as the IAB report and Forbes suggest.

We've reported before in posted columns such as…

More Videos for Manufactured Housing Success!

…vivid, real-life examples of how videos can be used to make points and tell a tale. A key part of what the mainstream media does is interviews. Where are the interviews being done in our industry? Right here!

As an example, if you've not seen the just-added 10 minute interview with Chet Murphree of Deer Valley homes, please check it out. We now have two versions posted; one is about 3 and a half minutes, the other right at 10, both are found at the link below.

So Many Tools! Which One is For You?

Imagine the many ways how video and online marketing could be used to impact housing professionals, investors, public officials and the home buying public.

The tools and resources – including modern marketing – needed to grow a for-profit or non-profit enterprise like yours are all in our grasp. If you need a hand in reviewing your budget and marketing program, feel free to give me a call at the number below to set up a time for a discussion. ##

Once is NOT Enough!

November 1st, 2013 No comments

People are funny, all of us are at different times and in our own unique ways. It pays not to take yourself too seriously! Let's take a look at a behavior that – if we took too seriously – might cause us to laugh our hearts out, because it is just too funny for words (so long as we don't take ourselves too seriously!). And that is the mistaken notion that for most things, 'once can be enough.' Really?

Now, there are some things that are indeed 'one time' events. We are born, once. Billions of people have married only once. So just as many rules have there exception, so does this rule. But remember, the exception proves the rule, but the exception isn't the rule!

To prove the rule, we eat daily, drink daily, bathe or shower routinely, brush our teeth, go to the rest room and do a host of activities on a daily or routine basis. Once is not enough. That is the rule.

Now, this is a marketing and sales focused blog. Let's apply that rule of 'once is not enough' to marketing and sales.

Do you run an ad one time, and then never advertise again?

Do you build a website once time, and then never updated it again?

Do you say something to someone one time, and expect never to have to say that teaching or example again?

Since the time we were kids, we had to learn things the 'hard way,' one step at a time, one example at a time, and then we practiced, practiced and practiced some more until we engrained i! People 'practice' law, they practice medicine. Professional athletes – even high school or college athletes – practice, practice, practice.

Once is not enough!

Does the coach give only one pep talk? Never to be repeated ever again?

Does the cheer leading squad give only one cheer, and then never do it again?

Does the religious leader preach only once?

once-is-not-enough-posted-on-mhpronews-com.jpg

Please repeat after me. “Once is not enough!”

If the poster doesn't have you rolling on the floor yet, please check your pulse or get a cup of coffee, tea, energy drink or whatever wake up beverage you prefer. 😉

Once is not enough.

Manufactured and modular housing is a wonderful product, and we showcase that amazement through numerous – and growing numbers! – of examples located at this link here. Once is not enough, we keep adding to it. Have you visited? Have you shared it with others? Did you do it…more than once?

Once is not enough!

We do websites, marketing and training. We practice what we preach, because it works! When you need the services (and believe me, with all due respect, most of you do need web, marketing and sales development services), do you pick up the phone or email to ask us for our take and fees on what you need? Do you make your marketing and sales training pay?

Because when these things are done well, it is an investment, not a cost! It pays far more dividends than any stock you can name!

But once is not enough!

You don't get motivated once, you don't train just once, you don't learn once, watch TV, listen to radio, shop or go out to dinner just once. You do these things and more, over and over.

That's a huge hint!

Profitable professionalism requires repetition, as does most things in life.

Encourage your team to read MHProNews routinely. We create this as a 'free' resource – with hundreds and hundreds of free marketing and sales tips – to get people started and 'hooked' on the need to learn more to earn more. But Reading one article, one time, is not enough!

When you hit the stage that you realize that you need more than the free level of service, then please call us. Feel free to compare what we do to what anyone else in our out of our industry does! When you are ready to update your website, or need online ads, marketing, sales coaching or training, or whatever you do, please call.

Because when you do, you may find as many do…

…that once is not enough. We have – not one – but dozens of recommendations and hundreds of endorsements via LinkedIn that keep on growing! We didn't help just one person, one time. We've helped many, often! That suggests that we can help you and your organization profit and grow too.

Start out for free. Share all the free stuff. Do it to GROW.

But when you are ready for more, please call us. If you don't get an immediate reply, call or email again!

Because once is not enough. 😉 ##

What Avis, Hertz, Budget and National Rental Car Companies can teach Manufactured Housing

October 26th, 2013 No comments

A recent client-connected trip took me to Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport, so my travels also took me to what looked like their new rental car center. All of the major rental brands were there – Avis, Budget, Hertz, National – plus some that you seldom see or were new to me, such as Fox, Payless and Sikt.

What they all had in common was they were sharing this new, centralized, clean and appealing facility. But doesn't that happen in many airports from coast to coast? Don't we see rental car companies – competitors! – gathered near a location, all side by side?

Why would competitors do that?

Good question, let's look at a few reasons.

  • Easier for customers to find the location
  • Shared (read lower cost, more effective) marketing
  • Shared (lower cost) overhead for this kind of quality facility, which provides a…
  • Better customer experience.

Lessons for MH?

Something similar happens at trade shows, such as the approaching 2014 LouisvilleManufacturedHousingShow.com.

But most trade shows are only a 2½ day event. Where is their a similar cooperative effort the other 362½ days of the year?

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) and Google study, downloadable from the link below, showcases that some 90% of home shoppers are doing some or all of their shopping online. Some research puts that number at 94%, but either way it's high!

Manufactured Home Retailers, Communities, Lenders, Builders, Associations and Suppliers/Vendors of all kinds can each benefit from the obvious concept of having an image/educational web portal that can mimic in cyber-space at a very low cost what the rental car companies do.

The new ManufacturedHomeLivingNews.com has started what time will reveal to be an important step forward for our industry. Attend the free seminar at the 2014 LouisvilleShow.com, to see how YOU can benefit – free or at a low cost – from this ever more popular resource.

team-together-everyone-achieves-more-(c)2013-mhpronews-com-.jpg

The lessons for manufactured housing from the rental car example are clear. We could sum it up with this acronym, T.E.A.M. = Together Everyone Achieves More. ##

Sparks Wrap up the Discussion of the Future of the Land Lease Business Model, National Communities Council 2013 Fall Leadership Forum

October 20th, 2013 No comments

Each of the panels and presenters at the 2013 National Communities Council (NCC) inaugural 2013 Fall Leadership Forum offered multiple take-aways which properly applied could have been worth more than the price of admission.

/randy-rowe-r-green-courte-partners-chairman-gary-mcdaniels-yes-communities-joe-stegmayer-cavco-stephen-bruan-hometown-america-mhpronews-cutting-edge-blog- (1).jpg

Randy Rowe (l), Gary McDaniel, Joe Stegmayer, Stephen Braun (r)

For this column, we will focus on a very focused segment of the final panel discussion – The Future of the Land Lease Business Model – which featured Randy Rowe, Green Courte Partners (GCP), Gary McDaniel of Yes! Communities, Joe Stegmayer, Cavco Industries and Stephen Braun of Hometown America.

Don Westphal commented during the discussion that manufactured housing is “….the only industry that succeeded in spite of itself.”

Joe Stegmayer commented on the importance of sales training and product knowledge.

Since marketing, image and branding where among the topics at the NCC Fall Forum, certainly Don's and Joe's comments could have easily been applied to what is often the lack of a proper implementation of marketing and sales training in our industry. Does this cost our industry and land lease communities business?

A number of Industry Voices guest blog posts last month answered that question with a strong “yes.”

The subject of national MH Industry image campaign came up near the end of the panel discussion. Cavco Chairman and CEO Joe Stegmayer stated that “We would be willing to support” such a campaign.

Randy Rowe is a long time proponent of an image building and other professionalism enhancing efforts, as is showcased in this exclusive interview, linked here.

Green Courte's Chairman underscored that ½ of a percent or somewhat more of industry new home shipment revenues could fund a campaign that would rival the size of the highly successful GoRVing campaign, which is about $18 million a year.

Gary McDaniel said he disagreed.

Such a campaign, he argued, “Won't do much for us.”

McDaniel's offered up a common argument made by those who oppose such an effort, by saying that local, community level marketing and good business practices would do more for our industry than an image building effort would do.

Yes! Communities McDaniel's went on to say that if someone wants to call our homes a “mobile home,” then “God bless them.”

“A clean, affordable and safe place to live,” said McDaniel, “rather than respectability,” is what our industry's traditional home buyers seek.

To this comment Randy Rowe dove in with the comment, that while respecting McDaniel's, “I strongly disagree.”

Rowe pointed out that just getting around the “trailer moniker is huge.” “These are great homes,” Rowe said, built in a “temperature controlled environment.”

GCP's Chairman Rowe clearly expressed his conviction that we as an industry would attract more customers including those who are financially more affluent customers by improving our industry's image.

Beyond the NCC Fall Forum thinking

MHProNews has long supported the need for enhanced professionalism, including image building. This includes sales training which GMHA's Jay Hamilton said in this guest column was crucial, combined with image building.

Drew Chairman Leigh Abrams took a position very much akin to that of Randy Rowe in his interview, linked on his name above.

While we would whole heatedly agree with Randy Rowe's position – that a full fledged image campaign has strong merit and value to build the future of land lease communities and the industry at large – the nuance noted above has an echo in Gary McDaniel's call for sound professional performance at the local level.

We'd also take the editorial view that manufactured housing doesn't have to invest 10 million or more to get some benefit from image building. Image can be improved subtly but surely and at a low cost via online efforts, which other presenters at the NCC forum pointed out.

It is precisely with that thought which motivated the launch last summer of ManufacturedHomeLivingNews.com. We are already generating leads for pros via that platform that attract customers who may not have considered the manufactured housing option otherwise.

The Industry In Focus Report on the study by NAR and Google on Why You Should Target Home Shoppers Online clearly underscores the value of doing such online image building efforts.

Sam Landy of UMH Properties fame stated in his interview linked on his name that he sees how the industry could rise to 300,000 to 400,000 shipments again. Image building is part of the key!

UMH and CU Factory Built Lending are among those early supporters for this online image building effort.

Until the industry is willing to invest millions, a small fraction of that and the 3 easy steps found on the download linked at the end of the article here would turn ManufacturedHomeLivingNews into a significant force fueling more sales, could improve our political clout and improve the image for communities and our industry at large.

It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Those interested in “lighting candles” are encouraged to sound off or contact us at the number or email below. We are better off when we advance our image and professionalism together. ##

The new Manufactured Home Living Image Campaign

June 7th, 2013 No comments

tony-kovach.jpgThe early feedback on our new image building resource is in. So far, all of it has been very positive!

Examples of actual comments:

  • "I like it. I like it so much, that I plan to steal some ideas"…from the new site and use it.
  • "Very impressive. This keeps getting better and better."
  • "The original site was OK, but too much work to find content. This new version is easy to navigate and visually appealing. It makes me want to come back and look more."

We have had some questions and comments too, all of which are appreciated, and all of whom still very much liked this site. Yours comments and suggestions are welcome too. For those who want to see what the original, version 1.0 of the site looked like, click here.

Version 2.0 of ManufacturedHomeLivingNews.com – aka MHLivingNews.com – is linked above here.

There are a number of ways you can get involved in this Image Building Campaign.

They range from free no-brainers to pay to play and be featured on the site!

mhlivingnews-ipad-ver2_0b- (1).png

The paid options are all low cost, but more important, can drive business to your business that will pay. All of this will pay off for the industry, because improving the image will help our home owners along with all those dedicated pros in our industry

Quick Facts:

  • We already have the first retailer – that we know about – who has set up an RSS feed on his site to ManufacturedHomeLivingNews.com RSS and/or a hot link are a no-brainer.
  • We already have our first sponsors for the site, with more welcome.
  • We will provide opportunities for any legitimate MH Industry retailers, community, developer, manufacturer, lender or other product/service providers to have low cost pages and link backs. During the introductory phase, those who buy a page will have it on our site for the next 5 years (some common sense restrictions apply).
  • We will welcome and encourage association involvement in this project in ways that will be mutually beneficial. Association members or executives, please feel free to call 815-270-0500 or email me tony@mhmsm.com or latonyk@gmail.com, thanks!

In the days ahead, we will give you a more detailed tour of the ManufacturedHomeLivingNews site, the concepts and how we will continue to add to it in the days ahead. But lets pencil out a few quick points.

Target Audience

  • The general public.
  • Public officials (image building will help win more efforts with them too).
  • Current manufactured home owners and land lease community residents, because they can become our industrys promoters, if we are wise. They want to feel good about where they live! Give them a tool they can share with their friends, family, co-workers and associates, and they will share it for their own good reasons!
  • Industry members. Use this as a closing tool when needed. Example, the video about tornadoes and manufactured housing has already closed business for a forward thinking sales pro at their community.

A top executive at vertically integrated company told me this recently. Tony, we follow up on all our leads. So we know that we lose more business not to others in manufactured housing, but to people buying a conventional, site built house.

That is one of many reasons the industry needs this website!

We will continually add content to this new site, similar to how we have done it for the past 3½ years here on MHProNews.com. Adding content is one of the many ways that we will keep visitors coming back.

Manufacturers, Retailers and Communities are all welcome to submit an appropriately decorated featured home. For more information, please click here.

We will also showcase for readers how even lower end or older mobile homes are a legitimate, value option. Over time, our featured articles, homes and videos will deal with all of the common objections that skeptical prospects and the public have. We will also update the video with a bigger, better version 2.0 of that tool, a sponsor(s) for that video update are welcome.

Just Do It

Youve asked for it. Youve got it. Now, learn to use it and run with it!

Pass the word onto your team mates and to anyone you know. Here is a starting how to use this New Business and Image Building “free” tip article. Your questions and feedback by phone or email are welcome. ##
