It goes without saying. We are all different. We may share much in common, but it is differences that set us apart.  Learn to use what makes you different in a positive way.  Learn the lesson Timothy Q. Mouse shared with Dumbo to make him embrace those huge ears in the Disney movie classic.

“The very things that held ya down are going to carry ya up, and up and up!”

Another Key to Success

If you walked into a restaurant and the server didn't know the menu well, you'd be concerned or miffed.  If even a good restaurant you liked looked the same now as it did twenty years ago and served nothing new or different, you might be looking for another restaurant.

Study your product and service routinely.  See how it can be improved.  Check out this related article in Manufactured Home Living News, Professionalism, the KYPs and Manufactured Housing.##

Motivation and Inspiration!

January 19th, 2013 No comments

There are few things more motivating than a truly fine live event. I've read great books and articles, watched great videos and have also listened to 'inspirational' and motivating audio.

But a good live event gives you the energy of the crowd as well as the speaker(s). It is like the difference between an dead restaurant and one that is buzzing with energy!

The most motivating thing you are likely to be able to do is to go to the Louisville Manufactured Housing Show! Starting with the special Pre-Show Get the Edge event on January 22nd, and moving onto the main show that runs from January 23 until midday on January 25th, you want to come early and stay late every day.

Here is your link to the main LouisvilleManufacturedHousingShow.com website:

Here is your link to the show brochure, including seminars, exhibitors, homes on display and much, much more!

Zig Ziglar once said words to the effect, sure, you need regular doses of motivation. You also have to shower or bathe regularly too! We will be in booth #115 at Louisville, because it motivates us to motivate good pros like you! ##

He escaped Socialism, now he wants to save America

October 14th, 2012 2 comments

FoxNews and NPR have both featured stories about Thomas Peterffy. Fox said Peterffy created "one of the more personal ads of the 2012 campaign." On TV and online, his video warns against socialism while "urging America to vote Republican."

Quoting Fox:

"In the video, Peterffy recalls his childhood under socialism in Hungary, and says, "The nation became poorer and poorer. And that's what I see happening here." He warns that the United States, his adopted country, is embarking on a "slippery slope."

He continues: "America's wealth comes from the efforts of people striving for success. Take away their incentive with badmouthing success and you take away the wealth that helps us take care of the needy. Yes, in socialism the rich will be poorer — but the poor will also be poorer. People will lose interest in really working hard and creating jobs."

The ad doesn't mention the president or former Governor Mitt Romney. But the fact that he is investing millions of his own dollars in a message that echoes our Masthead blog column, Course Correction should make undecided or left leaning professionals in our industry take notice.

Peterffy founded Interactive Brokers. Forbes estimates his net worth at $4.6 billion. Peterffy is the political opposite of the more famous Hungarian-born billionaire, George Soros, known to support left wing causes and Barack Obama.

Peterffy has been interviewed by NPR for his role in popularizing electronic and online trading to securities

Thomas Peterffy was born in Hungary in 1944 and came to the United States in 1965. He learned English here, eventually launched Interactive Brokers in 1993 and lives in Greenwich, CN.

For those who have watched the first two debates, you will understand the following and how it relates to the above.

Clint Eastwood said it well. It is okay to let President Obama go. Register and vote Republican. Get your circle to do the same. Your company, job and a brighter future all depend on it. ##

Do Good Anyway

Some quotes, poems and sayings cut to the heart of a matter in a few words what lengthy explanations and books may fail to achieve.

The quote above is one such example, the quote that is the centerpiece of this inspirational poster was sent in by Mike DuPure, a manufactured housing sales professional whose career has included both communities and street retail centers.

Mike, thanks for the inspiration for this poster! ##

No Time

June 6th, 2010 No comments

Two workers worked in adjacent toll booths in the state of New York. One lamented her fate, feeling herself ‘stuck in a dead end job.’ Every day, she complained and protested, with a radio playing music in the background as she collected tolls and handed out receipts. The second worker spent the day listening to audio recordings every day. 8 years went by. The second worker’s wise investment of time and listening yielded a college degree, a positive can do spirit and a great new career. The first worker kept lamenting her fate, trapped in the same toll booth day after day, ‘stuck in a dead end job…’

…the above is based on a true story.

It is amazing how busy we can become. It is also interesting how we can miss opportunities that are right there in front of us. We can get ensnared in our patterns of thought and activity. People many not realize the opportunities because we all have blind spots. For that reason, it is common to hear the statement “I have no time for ______” and we have all heard or used something to fill in that blank. “No Time” becomes the excuse.

At the very fine Wisconsin Housing Alliance (WHA) seminar held 11 days ago, Tim Connor shared the fact that the ‘average’ person spends 30,000 hours during the course of their adult life commuting, running errands and generally in driving mode. That seemed like a high number at first. But after a quick check, it certainly seems very plausible. Drive time alone represents ‘some time’ available for educational or inspirational listening. Imagine a person who used their drive time for listening to positive and useful information has the time needed for earning 8 college degrees!

So we all have plenty of time indeed! We simply have to look for it.

With the advent of MP3 players, IPods or the ability to burn CDs from internet downloads; a wise professional can effectively use that 30,000 hours of drive time. By listening to good information, you have the opportunity for building your skills or learning items you can share with your team. Let’s see, on the one hand…listen to the radio, or on the other hand, learn more to earn more.

Hmmm…kind of a no-brainer.

is our first of what will be Industry business news daily via download or online here at www.MHMarketingSalesManagement.com/podcasts/.

One loyal reader of MHMSM.com has already emailed in to say, ‘This (the podcasts) are a great service. I can listen to industry news and a feature article every day as I’m getting ready for work.’ (lightly edited).

Starting as a young man in sales, and on through my management career in this industry, listening to audio recordings while driving was and is a great way to learn new ideas, to stay refreshed on concepts or to get and stay motivated.

One business owner some weeks back explained in an email how he creates rewards and ‘a quiz’ for this team, to encourage them to learn and improve from the information they find here at www.MHMSM.com. Imagine having so many top professionals in our Industry available for reading OR now listening via podcasts!

30,000 hours of available time. How are you and your team members using them? You and your business are either growing or shrinking, there is no in between. You and your team are either getting better or getting rusty. There is no better way to knock the rust off the mental wheels than by challenging yourself and your team with good, positive information!

Besides, as another reader turned listener here put it, podcaster Erin Patla’s “…voice is simply delightful.” When my wife says that Erin’s voice is great, that is an important insight indeed.

Now you can read Industry news, or listen to podcasts of top Factory Built Housing Industry News at Noon, or do both!

The Industry is slowly turning an important corner. You can see it in reports and feel it. When would you like to start selling more homes? When would you like to start filling vacancies? Or doing better marketing? When would you like to have a team member improve their management skills? Doesn’t using drive time wisely make good sense? Does now sound like a good time to start these career building habits?

Listen and learn!

Signing up for our podcasts may be quick and easy, but it is the best action you can take to making some of those 30,000 hours of drive time or other ‘down time’ pay of for you and your team. I was looking at a series of motivational quotations and came across these:

”If you are not taking care of your customer, your competitor will.”

“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.” – J. Maxwell

“Don’t’ just stand there, MAKE IT HAPPEN.” – Lee Iacocca

“The customer may be wrong but they are still the customer.” – Dave Phillips

“Keep going, keep learning, keep working & keep getting better! Everyday, every effort gets you closer.” – Marston
