Avoiding Rattlesnakes

April 4th, 2014 No comments

Story telling is how many indigenous people – including native Americans – passed on life lessons to their young.

First, let's share – courtesy of FirstPeople – the native American legend of the little boy and the rattlesnake.

The best predictor of future behavior and results is often past behavior and results. While this does not always hold true, for example the famous exception of Thomas Edison's 10,000 failed attempts before his success in inventing the light bulb, it is a widely accepted rule of thumb.

Animals act according to their nature. What makes people different than most creatures is that humans have a higher intellect. Can people change? Sure. People quit over-drinking, smoking or abusing drugs every day. They often do so through 12 Step or other programs.

But beware of the rattle snake.

The moral of the Cherokee story is to help others spot and avoid smooth talking, ear tickling and seductive “rattle snakes.” There will always be people who tell us what we want to hear, even if what they say is not true.

This is why fact checking is important. Without understanding the facts of an issue, the rattle snakes can tell us a tale we may want to hear and yet that may still later 'bite you.'

And please, never confuse those who protect others by engaging and capturing the snakes of the world – such as the honorable police, military or those in media who expose sometimes tough truths – with the snakes they seek to expose, capture or put away. ##

Feeling vs. Thinking

March 14th, 2014 No comments

We humans are beings who both feel and think. While thinking is respected in many circles, emotions are what entertainers, marketing, sales professionals, politicos, the media and so many others often target.

We have both emotion and reason, because we should use both.

Successful professionals learn to manage both emotions and sound reason.

Here are some thoughts on the subject.

"When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity."

- Dale Carnagie

"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."

- Laurence J. Peter

"We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics, nor all logic, but it is somewhat beauty and poetry."

- Maria Montessori

"I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few."

- Adolf Hitler

"Sometimes in life one experiences an emotion which is so strong that it is difficult to think, or to reason."

- Eric Cantona

It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble, it's what we know that ain't so."

- Will Rogers

"Emotions have taught mankind to reason."

- Luc de Clapiers

No Surrender! The Burning Heart, Survivor

February 16th, 2014 No comments

You couldn't tell from my love of the Rocky movie series that my interest in boxing is near zero. Rocky is not so much about boxing, as it is about what it takes to overcome; what it takes to achieve success and victory even against long odds.

Consider the lyrics to this song, supplied by the same person who did the montage for the video above.

While all of it is powerful, Survivor's lyrics in the third paragraph below are particularly packed with meaning. Ponder, enjoy, then just do it.

Burning heart

Two worlds collide, rival nations
It's a primitive clash, venting years of frustrations
Bravely we hope against all hope, there is so much at stake
Seems our freedom's up against the ropes
Does the crowd understand?
Is it a East vs. West, or man against man
Can any nation stand alone?

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire, in the burning heart

In the warrior's code, there's no surrender
Though his body says stop, his spirit cries never
Deep in our soul a quiet ember
Knows it's you against you
the paradox that drives us on
It's a battle of wills, in the heat of attack
It's the passion that kills
The victory is yours alone

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire

In the burning heart, just about to burst
There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst
In the darkest night, rising like a spire
In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire
In the burning heart.

Mickey Mantle…”It’s Unbelievable!”

February 7th, 2014 No comments

Without a healthy dose of humility, we can not grow. What baseball legend Mickey Mantle's quote above suggests is that you don't know what you don't know.

"During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at-bats a season. That means I played 7 years without ever hitting the ball." – Mickey Mantle.

"Sometimes I think if I had the same body and the same natural ability and someone else's brain, who knows how good a player I might have been." – Mickey Mantle.

Stop and think. Mantle, one of the great baseball players of all time, saying how much he didn't know. Mantle, admitting he could have learned more.

Those who think they know it all put themselves at a disadvantage. Ego checked, willing to learn and apply new ideas, we can grow. ##

All too often, we've all seen those who gave up too easily. Maybe we have done so ourselves. These two Vince Lombardi quotes reminds us to set high goals, and to then have the determination to go for the grand prize of success.

"Winners never quit and quitters never win."

-Vince Lombardi

"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."
